Chapter Eighteen

A flicker of surprise danced across his eyes before he hooded them. "I am not, my lady. Jax Tyrrell was sent to the gallows more than two decades ago."

"Are you certain?"

"What makes you think otherwise?"

She tugged at her lower lip. She didn't want to tell him about the notebook and the poetry book she'd found. Not yet. On the other hand, she needed to give him a reason for her suspicion.

"I saw you that day in St Giles," she finally confessed.

There was an unsettling glint in his eyes. "You seem to be making a habit of visiting the rookery. That must stop."

She plaited her muslin dress between her fingers. "Let us not repeat this discussion. I must insist on an answer."

"As I have explained, it is rather difficult to find suitable retainers at present, and I have had to resort to unorthodox methods to find people. Make no mistake, I have thoroughly investigated their backgrounds and found them suitable."

"But if you picked them up from the rookery, how can you tell they’re not criminals?" Avery asked, her voice full of suspicion. "You won't allow me to visit the rookery, yet here you are bringing the rookery to my house. What if one of them was responsible for the burglary?"

Jerkins stared at her for a few long moments. "A person's lowly upbringing doesn't automatically make them a lawbreaker," he reprimanded her.

"Of course not." She bit on her lip.

"I have found Fred, Emma, Cilly, and Mary to be trustworthy. That's all I need." His dark gaze was intense. "What is also necessary is that you trust me. Unconditionally."

"I trust you." Her voice was slightly uneven. She trusted him about as much as a mouse trusted a hawk.

"That's good, then," Jerkins said quietly.

Really, she needed to regain control of the situation. She was the mistress; he was her servant. She had to tell him what to do, not the other way round.

Avery cleared her throat. "Well, that's done then, Jerkins. I have much to do. Call me a carriage, please."

He did not move. "Where do you intend to go, my lady?"

She waved her hand. "To Hounslow Heath. I have some research to do."

"Very well, my lady. As Fred is out on an errand and Mrs Wimplethorpe is still sleeping, I shall accompany you."
